Blue mussel is most commonly harvested for food. It has a mild ocean flavour with a faint sweet, mushroom-like undertone. Their subtle taste is an excellent addition to many dishes, like seafood chowder, paella, or seafood linguine. When steaming Mussels in their shell, instead of adding water to the pan, use a more creative ingredient such as stock, dry white wine, a crisp beer, tomato sauce, or coconut milk. While sauteing, use aromatic like onion, garlic, shallots, or chili. The flavour will be absorbed by the shellfish and form the foundation for a tasty sauce.
